Critical Illness Insurance: Protecting the Golden Goose – you

A while back, I shared a story about a 46-year-old man I knew and is happy that I share his story.

He is a father to a wife and 3 children. It's a typical lifestyle. He did a bit of exercise, went for a bike ride, and played golf. He was suddenly struck with chronic back pain that lasted for over a week. He was hospitalized twice during this period for further investigations.

He was eventually diagnosed with mycotic aortic neurism at the end of that week. This was a serious condition and kept him in hospital for quite some time.

He was in hospital for much longer than he wanted. He was finally released from hospital after graft surgery and taking more antibiotics than may be necessary. It took much, much longer for a full recovery than he expected.

Having survived a life changing event, what does the lump sum paid mean to him? "Critical illness cover gave me financial buffer that I could use however I needed it, freeing me up to concentrate on getting better."

What is critical illness insurance and do I need it?

Critical Illness Insurance provides a plan that pays a lump sum tax-free if you are diagnosed as having one of the potentially life-altering illnesses.

Apart from the obvious impact on your health, financial well-being is the most important risk when you are diagnosed with a critical disease. Because a critical diagnosis often means that most people will have to take time off work and may lose their income or need to care for others, this is a major risk.

You could be unable to provide for your family financially. If your child is critically ill, the same applies.

Unexpected consequences can also be associated with a critical diagnosis. Medical bills and other expenses incurred during your recovery or treatment. Your mortgage payment will also need to be made.

The likelihood of you not being covered for critical illness will differ from person to person depending on your personal circumstances. The most common reason is that you have a health problem. If your condition is not serious, it shouldn't be a problem. If you have a moderate one, you can still get insurance. However, the premium may be higher to account for the higher risk you pose to the insurer.

The question is, if a portion of your household income were lost or unexpected expenses arose as a result of your diagnosis, how would you manage to maintain your standard of living?
